About The Weather Company

The Weather Company, an IBM Business, is the world's leading provider of weather data and insights. They empower businesses and governments to better understand the effects of weather on their operations, supply chains, and planning by delivering highly accurate forecasts and analytics on a global scale.

The Challenge

While the Weather Company's data was unparalleled, its customers needed to visualize its impact within high-fidelity simulation environments. Existing tools could not render the real-time, physics-based effects of weather in a 3D world, creating a substantial gap for critical training and planning. The company needed a functional prototype to showcase this next-generation capability at I/ITSEC 2023, a major industry conference just six months away.

The Solution

Infused Innovations led a strategic collaboration between The Weather Company, simulation experts SimCentric, and Epic Games’ Unreal Engine group. Our team took charge of the product development, engineering a solution to stream real-time global weather data directly into Unreal Engine. This allowed the engine to render not just the visual look of the weather but also its physical effects, creating a truly dynamic and realistic simulation environment.

The Results

Against a tight six-month deadline, the team delivered a successful and functional Minimum Viable Product (MVP). The solution was unveiled at I/ITSEC 2023, where it made a significant splash, demonstrating a revolutionary new capability for the industry. The Weather Company now has a powerful tool that allows its customers to conduct hyper-realistic analysis, empowering them to make better decisions by understanding the operational impact of weather.
