OSHEAN: Bridging the Digital Divide with a Private 4G Network

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools online, a stark digital divide emerged, leaving many inner-city students without the broadband access they needed to learn. Rhode Island turned to OSHEAN, and OSHEAN turned to Infused Innovations to architect a solution. We provided strategic and technical leadership to plan and deploy a private 4G LTE network, bringing critical connectivity directly into students' homes.

About OSHEAN

OSHEAN (Ocean State Higher Education Economic Development and Administrative Network) delivers carrier-class networking and cloud solutions to Community Anchor Institutions across Rhode Island. Their mission is to provide the critical digital infrastructure that their communities need to thrive.

The Challenge

The sudden shift to virtual schooling during the pandemic created an immediate crisis for students in underserved communities who lacked reliable home internet. Standard wifi solutions could not provide the necessary coverage. A more powerful, wide-area solution was needed to ensure thousands of students were not left behind.

The Solution

Infused Innovations partnered with OSHEAN to solve this critical problem. Acting in a vCTO and vCINO capacity, we developed the project plan, led the vendor selection process, and provided the technical leadership for the rollout. We used data and analytics to map student density, ensuring the private 4G LTE network was deployed in the locations where it would have the greatest impact.

The Results

The private 4G network was successfully deployed, bridging the digital divide for thousands of students. This innovative solution provided reliable, high-speed internet access directly to the homes that needed it most, ensuring those students could participate in virtual schooling and continue their education.
